Chapter Seven
OLIVER
Christmas morning comes too soon, and Iâd like nothing more than to spend the holiday in bed with Piper. But after some debateâof which I lost. And attempts on my part to distract her under the coversâtotally worth the effort. Piper informs me that we are still going over to the hangar to celebrate the holiday with much of the town.
It's a recent Frontier, Alaska tradition for everyone to come to the hangar for a potluck meal. Usually, the idea of going there would be great, but I told Piper last night about how Thayer fired me, and things could get awkward. She got quiet for a moment before she got out of bed and disappeared down the hall. I could hear the sound of her talking in hushed tones to someone before she yells, âAsshole!â She returned shortly after and informed me that I wasnât fired and that we were still going.
Iâm not one for letting others fight my battles for me, but I love that she is strong enough to take on the person she cares most about in the world for me. I still want to try and resolve things with Thayer. His friendship means too much to me. I just need to make it clear to him that Iâm not going anywhere and that I will never hurt Piper.
Half the town is already there by the time we show up. The planes that are usually housed here have been moved outside to make room for the party. Tables and chairs are scattered about, with people sitting and standing around them already eating. The spread of food is immense, and Piper tells me the number of people here has doubled since last year. I scan the crowd, and I see Thayer standing on the other side of the room with his arm looped around Adaâs waist. They are talking to some other pilots and their wives. Thayer throws his head back in laughter and catches my eye. He leans down and whispers something to Ada. She says something and gives him a stern look that tells him to, play nice.
Piper squeezes my hand reassuringly as he moves through the crowd towards us. Thankfully he doesnât make a scene when he reaches us.
âI need to talk to you in the office.â Thayer gestures for me to follow him.
Piper looks like she wants to step in and say something, but I give her a tiny shake of my head. Thayer and I need to talk and get this out. Even if that means he needs to throw a punch, Iâd happily take it if it meant that heâd give his blessing to us. I donât want to lose my friend, but I won't give up, Piper.
âI got an interesting call this morning from Piper,â he says when we step into the quiet office.
I knew she made a call last night, and I assumed it was to Thayer, but I have no idea what else was said, so I stay quiet.
